With a growing trend towards incorporating specific diets into our lifestyle as opposed to trying to diet specifically to lose weight, cooking and the way we use our kitchens has changed. With attention to details such as portion size, finding ways to enjoy foods we love eating less carbs and embracing gluten-free diets by choice or due to health reasons there are actually a few kitchen gadgets that will make eating healthy easier. Here are five gadgets you should give a try:
Spiralizer:
All three of these diets have one thing in common: Less gluten and carbs. A spiralizer will allow you to create “pasta” using veggies such as zucchini and carrots. Although spaghetti squash offers an excellent choice for a noodle alternative, this does not work as well for the raw diet. As well it is nice to have some variety. A spiralizer will make short work of creating long and yummy pasta like threads of various sizes perfect to be blanched quickly in boiling water or served raw for the raw diet enthusiast. They come in a number of designs including those that are actually called a veggie pasta maker to those referred to as spiralizers. Some models can only do veggies of a certain size whereas others can take on anything from a zucchini to a beet. You will enjoy the same effect of eating a plate of your favourite pasta without the carbs or gluten.
Mandolin:
A mandolin will allow you to create all kinds of healthier choices for snacks such as any root veggie chip from beets and carrots to celeriac and sweet potato. You can also use a mandolin to create thin layers of eggplant and zucchini to make gluten-free, low carb lasagna. Once you get your layers of sauce and cheese baked altogether you really won’t miss the pasta and may even prefer the difference.
Veggie Choppers:
If you are going to be enjoying more raw, fresh foods or will be needing some ways to dress of your low carb or gluten-free diet than a supersonic veggie chopper is a must. There are so many different models out there it is hard to say which one will work best for you. Salad lovers will appreciate the Toss and Chop, which kind of looks like a weird pair of scissors used to chop and toss your salad in one bowl without the need for a knife. There are also choppers that allow you to place all your veggies in a canister and chop them all at once. This is ideal for creating everything from cole slaws to fresh home made salsa or guacamole. Yum. There are also choppers that you can press your veggies into one by one. The good thing is that these are all hand operated without electricity so they are energy efficient as well.
Silicone Baking Mat:
One of the textures you might miss with gluten-free or low carb diets is that nice crispness of a cracker or chip. Snacking can be the biggest challenge of sticking to these two diets and making yummy breads and crackers is still possible using the right ingredients. A silicone baking mat will allow you to crisp up pleasing crispy recipes such as flaxseed crackers/chips and they are also ideal for low carb and gluten-free biscuits, flat breads and even cheese crisps.
Kitchen Scale:
Kitchen scales are a must for those who are getting serious about portions. They are very affordable and come in a number of models from sets in different sizes to attractive glass and stainless steel models that look good on your counter. There are even digital weigh spoons if you are really getting down to every last gram.
With these types of gadgets becoming more in demand you can probably find them in most big box stores. However if you are looking for state of the art models you are better off to visit a kitchen shop that will offer you more variety in models, sizes and features.
